South Manchester Book Group

We're a friendly and open reading group, and we share a love of books and discussing them with other people. We meet every fortnight, but you don't have to come to them all. It's dead simple; choose a book you like the sound of, read it (or even part of it) beforehand and turn up with a few ideas and money for beer / wine / flirtinis. It's very informal, and we're quite a friendly bunch.

We normally meet at the Fletcher Moss on William Street in Didsbury around 8 pm. We can usually be found on the table with the books and flirtinis. Whilst the contagion lasts and we remain indoors we'll meet online, reading virtual books and drinking virtual flirtinis — vlirtinis if you will.

We've become rather popular recently so unfortunately aren't accepting new members just at the moment. But please drop us a line on the Contact Us form and we'll add you to our mailing list.

Our reading list, past, present, and future, appears here and a short version of what we’re reading next is here.

I Am Legend - Richard Mathesen

I Am Legend - Richard Mathesen

Hi. I'm Cathy. I am Legend was the first time I've visited a bookclub anywhere. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it.

Since I'd love to come again and had a few people wonder why I'm here and it was kind of noisy and my accent is somewhat unintelligible to you, a few words of introduction.

I'm Australian. I've been living out of a suitcase since about July 2009 (long story) and figured sometime during this period that I might just as well do that here. The exchange rate is a treat. In the past whenever I've come over I've gotten 33p for $1 and it is going on for double that at the moment. 61p!!!

I got here late April, went back home to organise my Italian citizenship a couple of months ago so that I could stay here long-term more readily. Came back a few weeks ago.

I'm really starting to enjoy Manchester, not least because my friend Harry keeps introducing me to great places, this being one. Not to mention, where else in the world can you get fishfingers in a roll?

At the moment I'm staying with friends in Didsbury while exploring the fanciful idea of getting my own place near by.

Why don't I have any money? Because I'm an Arts grad and one of the things I do is selling antiquarian/secondhand books. PLEASE don't tell me you get your books from Amazon. I mean, buy them there, just don't break my heart about it. Before getting here I'd been reading about all the bookshops closing down. I can see that is happening. Still, I can also see you are far, far better off for bookshops than Australia is.

Since getting here earlier this year, one new bookshop has closed down in Didsbury, but there are still two in the Village, one new and one secondhand. The secondhand one is behind Art of Tea on Barlow Moor Road. It is a really excellent place to browse and well worth a visit. Honestly. I'm not just saying that because I'm biassed!!

Sorry, didn't mean to start proselytizing.

Cheers, Cathy

Hi I'm Harry and I thought I'd also introduce myself.

I had a smashing time, and after I'd cleared up the broken glass I enjoyed talking with you.

I've pretty much just got back from travelling round the world, so I'm currently looking for some kind of gainful employment. In between doing this, I'm reading a lot, and occasionally sitting in the pub.

I've started English Passengers, so I'll see you in a couple of weeks.

Pip pip !
